To the Rescue chronicles the life and ministry of this extraordinary leader. It is filled with the heartwarming personal accounts so typical of President Monson - some that have become favorites over time and many others that have not been told before. Readers will be transported to his childhood, where he learned his first lessons about reaching out to others. They will glimpse his school experiences, his hobbies (especially his prize Birmingham roller pigeons), his military service in the navy, and his courtship with Frances Johnson, who would become his eternal companion and greatest support. Most important, readers will observe Thomas S. Monson going "to the rescue" in his more than six decades of devoted Church service. Called as a bishop at age twenty-two, as a counselor in a stake presidency at age twenty-seven, as a mission president at age thirty-one, and as a member of a Quorum of the Twelve Apostles at age thirty-six, he became early on a skilled administrator and a tireless servant of the Lord. He oversaw the work of the Church in East Germany for more than twenty years, beginning with hushed meetings held in automobiles to avoid listening devices and culminating in the dedication of a temple behind the Iron Curtain. He played key roles in landmark programs in the Church, from correlation to welfare to the publication of the LDS editions of the scriptures. And through it all, he recognized people as individuals and ministered to their need in personal ways.

I do agree with others that this is definitely not her best book but it's an easy read and a true human story, all quite believable. I noticed some readers have complained that there are grammar mistakes and minor errors, however overall Ms Shreve is an excellent writer and if like me you are a prolific reader so have to keep to mostly books on offer, then definitely these flaws are minor. I enjoyed the book, it's an easy read,Product details

Loved it
I always expect a good story from this author. The characters are real people facing problems in their lives and I feel their emotions and struggles as my own because they are so well drawn.
I am a Shreve lover, and have read all her novels but A Change in Altitude--which I just purchased on . Shreve just died, so this is a good time to read all her novels. Rescue was the one I unfortunately liked least, but it 's still readable.
I have just "discovered" Anita Shreve and am so happy I did. Ms Shreve writes with depth and compassion and her characters resonant long after the book ends. She has become my new favorite author. I highly recommend this excellent book.
A primer on ministering to others as Jesus Christ did. I was especially fascinated by the work he did on East Germany behind the Iron Curtain.
The writing was not great. A personal touch was decidedly missing.
As a retired RN (and former Emergency Room nurse) there was a lot in this story that was just not believable. Perhaps someone not familiar with the ethics of medicine would find this book enjoyable but a lot of it just raised anger as I read. I did read it through but would not necessarily recommend this book.
I haven't read Anita Shreve's books in a while but this book seemed to be different flavor than the ones I had read in the past. There are at least 3 story plots in this book that meld together to tell the story of a single father, a questionable & sometimes missing mother and their teenage daughter. I felt that the father's story/profession overcame the story several times undermining my interest in the book a couple of times.
I enjoyed the book, it's an easy read,
